POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION & ANXIETY
You are not alone — and you don't have to feel this way forever.
Postpartum depression and anxiety are real, common, and treatable. We are here to help — with specialized care built around you, your body, and this season of life.
How Bloom Approaches Postpartum Care
At Bloom Mental Health & Wellness, we don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to postpartum care — because no two women experience it the same way.
When you come to us, we start by getting to know you fully. We look at your full health picture — your sleep, your nutrition, your medical history, and how your body has changed since birth. We may recommend blood work to better understand how your physical health is affecting your mental health. From there we build a personalized treatment plan that is designed specifically for you.
Your plan may include:
Integrative approaches
Nutrition guidance, sleep support, movement, bright light therapy, and other evidence-based strategies that support your whole body recovery.
Medication management
when appropriate and safe, we provide evidence-based medication support tailored to your postpartum body — including for women who are breastfeeding
Therapy
we offer therapeutic support as part of your care, creating space to process what you're feeling and develop tools that actually work in your daily life
Ongoing follow-up
we don't just hand you a prescription and send you on your way. We check in regularly, reassess, and adjust your plan as you heal
WHY BLOOM IS DIFFERENT
*
WHY BLOOM IS DIFFERENT *
Most providers aren't equipped to treat postpartum mental health with the depth it deserves. At Bloom, our team includes a dual board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Certified Nurse-Midwife — a combination of expertise that is rare to find in one practice.
This means we understand what your body goes through during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum in a way that most mental health providers simply don't. We stay current on the latest research so we can offer you a full range of evidence-based options — including medication management for breastfeeding mothers and women who were pregnant — rather than defaulting to "wait and see."
We also know that postpartum mental health doesn't exist in isolation. It's connected to your sleep, your nutrition, your relationships, your birth experience, and your identity. We treat all of it — not just the symptoms.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
YOUR FIRST VISIT
Your first visit at Bloom is 90–120 minutes — online via telehealth or in person in Sioux Falls, SD. This is a conversation, not an interrogation. We'll get to know you, hear your story, and begin to understand what's been going on since birth. There's no pressure to have it all figured out before you arrive — just come as you are. By the end of your first visit you'll have a clear next step and a personalized plan that feels right for you.
FOLLOW UP APPOINTMENTS:
Follow-up visits are typically 30–60 minutes and are scheduled based on your individual needs — anywhere from weekly to every few months. We reassess regularly, check in on how you're feeling, and adjust your plan as you heal.
TELEHEALTH AVAILABLE:
We know that getting out of the house with a newborn isn't always possible — and working around nap schedules, feeding times, and unpredictable days is a reality we understand. That's why all appointments are available via telehealth across South Dakota. Attend from your couch, your car, or wherever you can find a quiet moment. We want getting support to be as easy as possible for you.
OUR APPROACH:
At Bloom we believe that postpartum mental health is deeply connected to your whole body — not just your mind. That's why we don't just treat symptoms. We look at the full picture.
That might mean recommending blood work to understand how your nutrition or physical health is affecting how you feel. It might mean exploring sleep strategies, movement, bright light therapy, or nutritional support alongside medication management or therapy. It might mean advocating to your OB or midwife on your behalf when you need someone in your corner
you deserve to be heard. your care should be individualized. healing is possible.
WHAT IS POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION & ANXIETY?
Postpartum depression and anxiety are among the most common — and most undertreated — experiences a woman can have after birth. They can begin days after delivery or emerge gradually over weeks and months. And despite how common they are, too many women are told it's just the baby blues, sent home, and left to figure it out on their own.
Postpartum depression and anxiety are not a reflection of how much you love your baby. They are not a sign that you are failing. They are medical conditions — and they are treatable.
You might be experiencing postpartum depression or anxiety if you:
Feel disconnected from your baby or like you're going through the motions
Cry frequently or feel a persistent sadness you can't shake
Feel overwhelmed, on edge, or like something bad is about to happen
Have intrusive or scary thoughts that frighten you
Struggle to sleep even when your baby is sleeping
Feel like you've lost yourself or don't recognize who you are anymore
Wonder if your baby would be better off without you
Feel numb, empty, or like you're watching your life from the outside
Frequently Asked Questions
-
The baby blues are very common and typically last 1–2 weeks after birth — characterized by mood swings, crying, and feeling overwhelmed as your hormones shift. Postpartum depression is more persistent, more intense, and doesn't resolve on its own. If you're still struggling after two weeks, or if your symptoms are interfering with your ability to care for yourself or your baby, it's worth reaching out for support.
-
Yes — there are medications that are considered safe during breastfeeding, and we stay current on the research so we can offer you informed options. Every situation is different, and we'll work with you to find an approach that supports both your mental health and your breastfeeding goals.
-
That experience is more common than you might think — and it doesn't mean medication can't help you. It often means the wrong medication, the wrong dose, or an underlying factor that wasn't addressed was getting in the way. At Bloom we take a comprehensive look at your full health picture before making any recommendations, and we work with you to find an approach that actually fits your needs — not just what worked for someone else.

AI tools can be a helpful resource for information, journaling prompts, or feeling less alone in a moment — and we understand why many women turn to them, especially in the middle of the night when support feels hard to reach. But AI cannot assess your full health picture, recommend or manage medications, provide therapy, or build a personalized treatment plan around your unique needs and life stage. Postpartum depression and anxiety are medical conditions that deserve real, human care from a provider who knows you. We're here for that — and we'd love to be in your corner.
-
Yes — though they often occur together. Postpartum anxiety is characterized by persistent worry, racing thoughts, feeling on edge, and physical symptoms like a racing heart or trouble sleeping. Postpartum depression tends to involve more sadness, numbness, and disconnection. Both are real, both are treatable, and both deserve attention.
-
Yes — all appointments at Bloom are available via telehealth across South Dakota. We know getting out of the house with a newborn isn't always possible, so we've made it as easy as we can to access care from wherever you are.
-
Without treatment, postpartum depression can last months or even years. With the right support, most women see significant improvement much sooner. Everyone's timeline looks different — which is why we build a personalized plan and reassess regularly as you progress.
-
A therapist provides talk therapy to help you process emotions, develop coping strategies, and work through patterns of thinking. A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is a medical provider who can do all of that AND prescribe and manage medications, order or review blood work, and take a comprehensive clinical look at how your physical health is affecting your mental health. At Bloom our providers are PMHNPs — meaning you get the depth of clinical expertise alongside the warmth and support of a therapeutic relationship, all in one place.
