PREMENSTRUAL DYSPHORIC DISORDER (PMDD)
You are not imagining it — and you are not overreacting.
PMDD is a real, recognized condition that affects women in the weeks before their period. It's a whole-body experience rooted in how your brain and body respond to your cycle. At Bloom, we do the detective work to understand what's driving your symptoms and build a personalized plan to help you feel like yourself again.
How Bloom Approaches PMDD
PMDD is often dismissed — by providers, by loved ones, and sometimes even by the women experiencing it. But what you're feeling is real, it's cyclical, and it has a root cause worth understanding.
At Bloom we approach PMDD by looking at your full picture — not just your symptoms in isolation. We take time to understand your cycle patterns, your health history, your sleep, and your nutrition, and may recommend blood work to better understand what's contributing to how you feel. From there we build a personalized plan designed specifically around you and your cycle.
Your plan may include:
Integrative approaches
cycle tracking, nutritional support, sleep strategies, movement, and other evidence-based tools that support your whole body through every phase of your cycle
Medication management
if indicated and something you'd like to explore, we'll walk you through evidence-based options tailored to your individual needs, health history, and goals
Therapy
we offer therapeutic support as part of your care, creating space to process how PMDD is affecting your relationships, your work, and your sense of self
Ongoing follow-up
we check in regularly, track how your symptoms shift month to month, and adjust your plan as your needs and your cycle evolve over time
WHY BLOOM IS DIFFERENT
*
WHY BLOOM IS DIFFERENT *
PMDD is frequently misdiagnosed — often mistaken for depression, bipolar disorder, or simply "being emotional." At Bloom, we take the time to truly understand your experience before making any recommendations.
Our entire team is certified in Perinatal Mental Health (PMH-C) — a specialized credential that demonstrates advanced training in the intersection of hormonal health and mental wellbeing. This means we understand how your cycle, your body, and your mental health are all connected in ways that many providers overlook.
We also bring a level of integrative expertise that goes beyond a standard psychiatric appointment. We look at your full picture — not just your mood — and build a plan that addresses the root of what's driving your symptoms rather than simply managing them.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
YOUR FIRST VISIT
Your first visit at Bloom is 90–120 minutes — online via telehealth or in person in Sioux Falls, SD. We'll get to know you, hear about how your symptoms show up throughout your cycle, and begin to build a picture of what's going on. There's no pressure to have it all figured out before you arrive — just come as you are. By the end of your first visit you'll have a clear next step and a personalized plan that feels right for you.
FOLLOW UP APPOINTMENTS:
Follow-up visits are typically 30–60 minutes and are scheduled based on your individual needs. Because PMDD is cyclical, we pay close attention to how your symptoms shift month to month and adjust your plan accordingly. We remember your story — and we build on it every visit.
TELEHEALTH — CARE THAT FITS YOUR LIFE:
All appointments are available via telehealth across South Dakota — so you can access care from home, on a hard day, or wherever works best for you. We want getting support to be as easy as possible.
OUR APPROACH:
At Bloom we believe that PMDD deserves to be taken as seriously as any other medical condition — because it is one. Too many women spend years being dismissed, misdiagnosed, or told their symptoms are just part of being a woman. We disagree. Stability is possible with the right support, plan, and provide who genuinely knows you. Whatever your path to feeling better looks like, we’ll build it together.
you deserve to be believed. your care should be individualized. stability is possible.
WHAT IS PMDD?
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a condition in which the hormonal changes of the menstrual cycle trigger significant mood, emotional, and physical symptoms in the days or weeks before a period. It is more severe than PMS and can significantly disrupt daily functioning, relationships, and quality of life.
PMDD is not a personality flaw, a lack of willpower, or something you just need to push through. It is a recognized medical condition — and it is treatable.
You might be experiencing PMDD if you:
Feel like a completely different person in the week or two before your period
Experience intense mood shifts, irritability, or anger that feel out of proportion
Struggle with depression, hopelessness, or anxiety that lifts shortly after your period starts
Feel overwhelmed, withdrawn, or unable to function in your normal routines
Notice your symptoms are consistently tied to a specific phase of your cycle
Have been told it's "just PMS" but feel like it's so much more than that
Feel relief when your period arrives — only to dread the next cycle
Frequently Asked Questions
-
PMS is common and typically involves mild physical and emotional symptoms before your period. PMDD is significantly more intense — affecting your mood, relationships, and ability to function in ways that go far beyond typical PMS. The key distinction is severity and the degree to which symptoms disrupt your daily life.
-
There is no single lab test for PMDD. Diagnosis is based on a thorough review of your symptoms, health history, and cycle patterns. One of the most helpful tools is tracking your symptoms across at least two menstrual cycles to identify the pattern. At Bloom we take time to understand your full picture before arriving at any conclusions.
-
Yes — and it frequently is. The key difference is timing. PMDD symptoms are consistently tied to a specific phase of the menstrual cycle and typically lift shortly after your period begins. If your symptoms follow this pattern, it's worth exploring PMDD as a possible diagnosis even if you've previously been told you have depression or another condition.
-
For some women symptoms improve after menopause when hormone fluctuations cease — but waiting is not a treatment plan. PMDD can significantly impact your quality of life, relationships, and daily functioning for years without intervention. With the right support, most women see meaningful improvement much sooner.
-
For many women, yes — particularly around hormonal transitions like pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, or stopping hormonal birth control. This is why early intervention and ongoing monitoring are so important. At Bloom we reassess regularly and adjust your plan as your needs evolve.
-
Not everyone with PMDD needs medication — and we never pressure anyone toward a treatment they're not comfortable with. For some women, targeted lifestyle changes, nutritional support, and integrative approaches make a significant difference. For others, medication is an important part of the plan. We'll work with you to find the right combination for your needs and goals.
-
This varies depending on the approach and the individual. Some women notice improvement within one to two cycles — others take longer. Because PMDD is cyclical, we monitor your symptoms month to month and adjust your plan accordingly. Progress is rarely linear but it is possible.

AI tools can be helpful for tracking symptoms, finding information, or feeling less alone in a difficult moment. But AI cannot assess your full health picture, manage medications, provide therapy, or build a personalized treatment plan around your unique cycle and needs. PMDD deserves real, human care from a provider who truly understands it — and that's exactly what we offer at Bloom.
Your cycle doesn't have to control your life.
PMDD is real, it is recognized, and it is treatable. You deserve care from a provider who takes your symptoms seriously and builds a plan around your actual life.
