PERINATAL MENTAL HEALTH
Pregnancy and postpartum are some of the most significant seasons of a woman’s life — and your mental health deserves expert care throughout every stage.
At Bloom Mental Health & Wellness in Sioux Falls, SD, we specialize in perinatal mental health — offering evidence-based, individualized care that considers both your wellbeing and your baby’s, from preconception through postpartum and beyond.
How Bloom Approaches PERINATAL MENTAL HEALTH
The perinatal period — which spans pregnancy, postpartum, and the time surrounding it — is one of the highest-risk windows for mental health challenges in a woman’s life. Hormonal shifts, physical changes, sleep deprivation, identity transitions, and the weight of new responsibility can all converge in ways that feel completely overwhelming.
At Bloom we approach perinatal mental health with the depth and nuance it deserves. We take a comprehensive look at your full health picture — your pregnancy history, your current symptoms, your sleep, your nutrition, and your support system — and may recommend blood work to better understand how your physical health is contributing to how you feel. From there we build a personalized plan that is safe, evidence-based, and designed specifically for you and your baby.
Your plan may include:
Integrative approaches
nutritional support, sleep strategies, movement, and other evidence-based tools that support your whole body through pregnancy and postpartum
Medication management
if indicated and something you’d like to explore, we’ll walk you through evidence-based options that have been researched for safety during pregnancy and postpartum, including for women who are breastfeeding
Therapy
we offer therapeutic support as part of your care, creating space to process the emotional complexity of the perinatal period
ADVOCACY
when needed, we work alongside your OB, midwife, or other providers to make sure your mental health is part of your overall care plan
WHY BLOOM IS DIFFERENT
*
WHY BLOOM IS DIFFERENT *
Perinatal mental health requires a level of specialized expertise that goes beyond general psychiatric care — and at Bloom, that specialization is built into everything we do.
Both of our providers hold Perinatal Mental Health Certification (PMH-C) — a credential that demonstrates advanced training in the mental health needs of women during pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond. This means we understand the unique hormonal, physical, and emotional landscape of the perinatal period in a way that shapes every recommendation we make.
We also specialize in medication management during pregnancy — an area where many providers default to stopping all medications without a thorough review of the research. At Bloom we do that research. We advocate for evidence-based options that keep you and your baby safe, and we work collaboratively with your obstetric team to make sure everyone is aligned on your care.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
YOUR FIRST VISIT
Your first visit at Bloom is 90–120 minutes — online via telehealth or in person in Sioux Falls, SD. We’ll get to know you, hear about what’s been going on through your pregnancy or postpartum experience, and start building a picture of what you need. There’s no pressure to have it all figured out — just come as you are. By the end of your first visit you’ll have a clear next step and a personalized plan built around you and your baby.
FOLLOW UP APPOINTMENTS:
Follow-up visits are typically 30–60 minutes. Because the perinatal period involves so much change — hormonally, physically, and emotionally — we pay close attention to how you’re shifting month to month and adjust your plan accordingly. We remember your story and build on it every visit.
TELEHEALTH — CARE THAT FITS YOUR LIFE:
All appointments are available via telehealth across South Dakota. Whether you’re navigating a high-risk pregnancy, recovering from birth, or simply can’t get out of the house with a newborn — we make it as easy as possible to access the specialized care you need, from wherever you are.
OUR APPROACH:
At Bloom we believe that pregnancy and postpartum mental health is not a luxury — it is essential care. A mother who is mentally well is better equipped to bond with her baby, recover from birth, and thrive in her new role. Whatever this season looks like for you — we’ll meet you there.
We believe:
Your mental health matters as much as your physical health — before, during, and after pregnancy
Evidence-based care is non-negotiable — especially when a baby is involved
You deserve a provider who stays in your corner — through every stage, every shift, and every unexpected turn
WHAT IS PERINATAL MENTAL HEALTH?
Perinatal mental health refers to the emotional and psychological wellbeing of women during pregnancy and the postpartum period — typically defined as the first year after birth, though mental health challenges can emerge beyond that window.
The perinatal period is one of the most significant hormonal transitions of a woman’s life — and for many women, it is the first time a mental health condition emerges or an existing one intensifies. Common perinatal mental health conditions include postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, prenatal depression and anxiety, PMDD flares in the postpartum period, birth trauma, and perinatal grief.
You might benefit from perinatal mental health support if you:
Are struggling with depression or anxiety during pregnancy
Are experiencing postpartum depression, anxiety, or intrusive thoughts
Have a history of mental health challenges and are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
Are currently on psychiatric medication and unsure how to manage it through pregnancy
Experienced a traumatic birth and are still affected by it
Are navigating pregnancy after a loss or infertility
Simply don’t feel like yourself and aren’t sure why
