GRIEF & PREGNANCY LOSS
Pregnancy loss is a grief unlike any other — and you deserve support that honors the depth of what you’ve been through.
At Bloom Mental Health & Wellness in Sioux Falls, SD, we provide compassionate, whole-body care for women navigating grief and pregnancy loss — at whatever stage of your journey you’re in, and without rushing your timeline.
How Bloom Approaches GRIEF & PREGNANCY LOSS
Grief after pregnancy loss is not just emotional — it’s physical. The hormonal crash that follows a loss, combined with disrupted sleep, changes in appetite, and the weight of what you’ve been through, can affect your whole body in ways that compound your emotional pain.
At Bloom we approach grief and pregnancy loss with the same comprehensive, whole-body lens we bring to every condition we treat. We take time to understand your full picture — your loss history, your physical health, your sleep, your support system, and how grief is showing up in your daily life. We may recommend blood work to better understand how your physical health is contributing to what you’re experiencing. From there we build a personalized plan built around what you need most right now.
Your plan may include:
Integrative approaches
nutritional support, sleep strategies, and other whole-body tools that support your physical recovery alongside your emotional healing
Medication management
if indicated and something you’d like to explore, we’ll walk you through evidence-based options that address the depression, anxiety, or sleep disruption that often accompany grief
Therapy
we offer therapeutic support as part of your care, creating space to process your loss at your own pace and in your own way
Ongoing follow-up
grief doesn’t follow a timeline and neither does your care. We check in regularly and adjust your plan as your needs evolve
WHY BLOOM IS DIFFERENT

WHY BLOOM IS DIFFERENT *
Pregnancy loss is one of the most profound griefs a woman can experience — and one of the most frequently minimized by the medical system. At Bloom, we don’t minimize it.
Both of our providers hold Perinatal Mental Health Certification (PMH-C) — meaning we have specific training in the mental health needs of women during pregnancy and postpartum, including pregnancy loss. We understand the hormonal reality of what your body goes through after a loss, the complexity of grieving a baby that others may not have known, and the particular pain of navigating loss in a world that often doesn’t know what to say.
We also understand that pregnancy loss rarely exists in isolation. For many women it is layered with infertility, previous losses, complicated feelings about a current or future pregnancy, and a grief that the people around them may not fully understand. At Bloom we hold all of it — without judgment, without rushing, and without expecting your healing to look a certain way.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
YOUR FIRST VISIT
Your first visit at Bloom is 90–120 minutes — online via telehealth or in person in Sioux Falls, SD. We’ll get to know you and hear your story — including your loss, your history, and how you’re doing right now. There is no pressure to have it together or know what you need. Just come as you are. By the end of your first visit you’ll have a clear next step and a personalized plan built around what you need most.
FOLLOW UP APPOINTMENTS:
Follow-up visits are typically 30–60 minutes. Grief doesn’t follow a predictable path and neither does your care — we schedule follow-ups based on your individual needs and adjust as your grief evolves. We remember your story and the baby you lost, and we build on that every visit.
TELEHEALTH — CARE THAT FITS YOUR LIFE:
All appointments are available via telehealth across South Dakota. Grief can make leaving the house feel impossible — and we understand that. We make it as easy as possible to access the support you need from wherever you are, on your hardest days and your better ones.
OUR APPROACH:
At Bloom we believe that pregnancy loss deserves to be grieved — fully, openly, and with real support. We believe your baby mattered. We believe your grief is valid no matter how early the loss occurred. And we believe you deserve care that honors the depth of what you’ve been through.
your loss is real. healing is not linear. you don’t have to carry this alone.
WHAT IS PREGNANCY LOSS GRIEF?
Pregnancy loss includes miscarriage, stillbirth, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, and termination for medical reasons — each carrying its own unique grief that deserves to be acknowledged and supported.
Grief after pregnancy loss is not just sadness. It can include shock, numbness, anger, guilt, anxiety, depression, physical symptoms, and a profound sense of isolation — particularly in a culture that often expects women to move on quickly and quietly. For many women, pregnancy loss grief is complicated further by the absence of rituals, the invisibility of the loss to others, and the uncertainty about future pregnancies.
You might benefit from grief support if you:
Are struggling to function in daily life after a pregnancy loss
Feel isolated, misunderstood, or like no one around you understands what you’ve been through
Are experiencing depression, anxiety, or intrusive thoughts following a loss
Are pregnant again after a loss and finding it emotionally overwhelming
Are navigating grief alongside infertility or repeated losses
Feel like your grief is too big, too complicated, or lasting too long
Simply need a space where you can talk about your baby without anyone telling you to move on
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Grief and depression can look very similar after a pregnancy loss — and they often occur together. Grief is a natural response to loss and typically involves waves of sadness, longing, and pain that gradually shift over time. Depression is more pervasive and persistent — affecting your energy, your sleep, your appetite, your ability to function, and your capacity to find any joy or relief. One important distinction is that grief, even at its most intense, usually allows for moments of connection or relief. Depression tends not to. If what you’re experiencing feels unrelenting, is getting worse rather than better, or is significantly affecting your daily functioning, it’s worth reaching out for support.
-
Yes — significantly. Pregnancy triggers a dramatic rise in hormones that drop sharply after a loss, in much the same way they do after birth. This hormonal crash can trigger or worsen depression, anxiety, sleep disruption, and physical exhaustion in ways that compound the emotional grief you’re already carrying. Your body has been through something significant — and it deserves care alongside your mind. At Bloom we take a whole-body approach to grief and pregnancy loss, which means we consider your physical health and hormonal recovery as part of your overall care plan.
-
There is no right timeline — and anyone who suggests otherwise hasn’t experienced it. Grief after pregnancy loss can be acute for weeks or months and may resurface around due dates, anniversaries, subsequent pregnancies, or seemingly unrelated moments for years to come. What matters is not how long you grieve but whether your grief is being supported, whether you’re able to function, and whether you’re moving through it in a way that feels sustainable. At Bloom we meet you wherever you are on that timeline — without judgment and without rushing.
-
Completely — and it is one of the most common experiences women describe after pregnancy loss. The innocence of pregnancy is often gone after a loss, replaced by fear, hypervigilance, and a difficulty allowing yourself to feel hopeful. This is sometimes called “pregnancy after loss anxiety” and it deserves real support. At Bloom we specialize in supporting women through subsequent pregnancies after loss — helping you navigate the emotional complexity of trying again without dismissing or minimizing what you’ve been through.
-
Pregnancy after loss is its own unique emotional experience — one that is often marked by anxiety, grief, hope, and fear existing alongside each other simultaneously. Many women find it difficult to bond with a subsequent pregnancy, to allow themselves to feel excited, or to trust that things will be okay. At Bloom we provide specialized support for women navigating pregnancy after loss — helping you process the grief of what you’ve lost while also creating space for the pregnancy you’re in. You don’t have to choose between grieving and hoping.
-
Yes — and this is an area that deserves far more attention than it typically receives. Recurrent pregnancy loss creates a layered, cumulative grief that is different from grieving a single loss. Each subsequent loss can reactivate grief from previous ones, making it feel compounded and sometimes overwhelming. Women navigating recurrent loss also often carry the weight of uncertainty about whether they will ever carry a pregnancy to term — which adds a dimension of anticipatory grief and anxiety that is its own unique experience. At Bloom we understand this complexity and provide care that honors the full weight of what you’ve been through.
-
Yes — particularly following traumatic losses such as stillbirth, late-term loss, emergency medical situations, or losses that involved significant physical trauma. PTSD after pregnancy loss can include intrusive thoughts or flashbacks about the loss, avoidance of reminders, hypervigilance, and emotional numbness. It is often underrecognized because it exists alongside grief rather than presenting on its own. At Bloom we provide trauma-informed care and understand the intersection of grief and trauma in the perinatal context.
-
This is one of the hardest parts of pregnancy loss — and there is no perfect answer. The most important thing to know is that you cannot pour from an empty cup. Seeking support for your own grief is not selfish — it is what makes it possible to show up for the people around you. Partners grieve differently, on different timelines, and with different needs — and that disconnect can feel isolating. At Bloom we create space to talk about the relational dimensions of grief, including how to communicate your needs and navigate loss alongside the people you love.
-
Yes — and it is one of the most universal experiences women describe, even when there is absolutely nothing they could have done differently. Guilt after pregnancy loss often takes the form of searching for a reason — something you ate, something you did, something you felt — because guilt can feel more bearable than the randomness of loss. At Bloom we hold space for this guilt without reinforcing it, helping you gently move toward understanding what happened and releasing the responsibility that was never yours to carry.
-
It is never too late. Grief that hasn’t been fully processed doesn’t disappear — it lives in your body, surfaces in unexpected moments, and can affect your mental health, your relationships, and your subsequent pregnancies for years. Many women seek support for a loss that happened long ago and find that doing so brings significant relief and healing they didn’t know was possible. At Bloom we welcome you wherever you are in your grief journey — whether it happened last month or ten years ago.
-
A traditional therapist focuses primarily on the emotional and psychological dimensions of grief — which is valuable and important. At Bloom, we bring that same emotional support alongside a clinical, whole-body lens. We can assess whether grief has developed into depression or anxiety that would benefit from medication management. We can look at how your physical health — your sleep, your nutrition, your hormonal recovery — is affecting your grief. And we hold Perinatal Mental Health Certification, which means we have specialized training in the unique experience of pregnancy loss that not every provider has. You get emotional support and clinical expertise in one place.
-
Complicated grief — grief that is tangled up in difficult circumstances, conflicting emotions, or losses that others don’t fully understand — is more common than most people realize. This might include a loss that came with relief as well as sadness, a loss following a difficult diagnosis, a loss in the context of relationship strain, or a loss that others in your life have minimized or not acknowledged. At Bloom we create a space where all of it is welcome — the grief that doesn’t fit neatly into what people expect, the feelings you’re ashamed of, and the parts of your story that feel too complicated to share elsewhere. There is no wrong way to grieve here.
