Depression TREATMENT FOR WOMEN
Depression in women is often driven by hormonal shifts, nutritional gaps, and life transitions that go unaddressed. You deserve care that actually gets to the root of it.
At Bloom Mental Health & Wellness in Sioux Falls, SD, we take a whole-body approach to understanding what’s really driving your depression — and build a personalized plan to help you feel hopeful, energized, and like yourself again.
How Bloom Approaches Depression
Depression can feel like a fog that won’t lift — and at Bloom, we understand that it rarely has just one cause. For many women, depression is connected to something physical: hormonal shifts, nutritional deficiencies, disrupted sleep, postpartum changes, or a medication that isn’t working the way it should.
When you come to us, we start by getting to know your full picture. We take a comprehensive look at your health history, sleep patterns, nutrition, and lifestyle — and may recommend blood work to better understand what’s contributing to how you feel. From there we build a highly individualized plan designed specifically around you.
Your plan may include:
Integrative approaches
nutritional support, sleep strategies, movement, bright light therapy, and other evidence-based tools that address depression at its root
Medication management
if indicated and something you’d like to explore, we’ll walk you through evidence-based options tailored to your individual needs, health history, and goals
Therapy
we offer therapeutic support as part of your care, creating space to process what you’re carrying and develop tools that help you move forward
Ongoing follow-up
we check in regularly, track your progress, and adjust your plan as you heal. We remember your story and build on it every visit.
WHY BLOOM IS DIFFERENT
*
WHY BLOOM IS DIFFERENT *
Too many women spend years on the wrong medication, in the wrong therapy, or simply told to “give it time.” At Bloom, we take a different approach.
Our entire team is certified in Perinatal Mental Health (PMH-C) — meaning we understand how depression shows up uniquely in women across every stage of life. Postpartum depression, premenstrual depression, depression during pregnancy, depression triggered by infertility or pregnancy loss — these are experiences we specialize in and take seriously in a way that most providers don’t.
We also bring integrative expertise that goes beyond a standard psychiatric appointment. We look at your full picture — sleep, nutrition, physical health, current medications, medical history — to find what’s actually driving your depression. Because managing symptoms isn’t enough. You deserve to actually feel better.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
YOUR FIRST VISIT
Your first visit at Bloom is 90–120 minutes — online via telehealth or in person in Sioux Falls, SD. We’ll get to know you, hear about how depression is showing up in your daily life, and start building a picture of what’s driving it. There’s no pressure to have it all figured out — just come as you are. By the end of your first visit you’ll have a clear next step and a personalized plan that feels right for you.
FOLLOW UP APPOINTMENTS:
Follow-up visits are typically 30–60 minutes and scheduled based on your individual needs. We check in on how your plan is working, reassess regularly, and adjust as you progress. Depression doesn’t heal on a fixed timeline — and we don’t treat it like it does.
TELEHEALTH — CARE THAT FITS YOUR LIFE:
All appointments are available via telehealth across South Dakota. When depression makes it hard to get out of the house — or life simply doesn’t allow it — we make it as easy as possible to access the care you need, from wherever you are.
OUR APPROACH:
At Bloom we believe depression is not a life sentence — and it’s not something you just have to live with. We believe every woman deserves a treatment plan that was actually built for her.
your depression has a root cause. you are more than your diagnosis. feeling better is possible
WHAT IS DEPRESSION?
Depression is more than feeling sad. It’s a whole-body experience that can affect your energy, your sleep, your appetite, your relationships, and your ability to find joy in the things that used to matter to you. For many women it goes unrecognized for years — especially when it’s connected to hormonal shifts or life transitions that are expected to be hard.
Depression is not weakness. It is not a character flaw. It is not something you can just push through with enough willpower. It is a real, recognized condition — and it is treatable.
You might be experiencing depression if you:
Feel persistently sad, empty, or hopeless
Have lost interest in things that used to bring you joy
Feel exhausted no matter how much you sleep
Struggle to concentrate, make decisions, or remember things
Feel worthless, guilty, or like a burden to others
Notice changes in your appetite or weight
Have withdrawn from friends, family, or activities you used to enjoy
Feel like you’re going through the motions but not really present
Wonder if things will ever feel different
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Sadness is a natural human emotion that typically comes in response to something difficult — a loss, a disappointment, a hard season — and gradually eases with time. Clinical depression is more persistent, more pervasive, and not always tied to a specific event. It affects your energy, your sleep, your appetite, your ability to concentrate, and your capacity to feel joy — often for weeks or months at a time. If what you’re feeling isn’t lifting or is interfering with your daily life, it’s worth talking to someone.
-
Yes — hormonal fluctuations are one of the most significant and most overlooked drivers of depression in women. Shifts in estrogen and progesterone across the menstrual cycle, during pregnancy, postpartum, and perimenopause can all trigger or worsen depression. At Bloom we take a whole-body approach that considers how your hormonal health is contributing to what you’re experiencing — because treating depression without addressing its root cause rarely leads to lasting relief.
-
Yes — postpartum depression has its own distinct character, shaped by the dramatic hormonal shifts of childbirth, the identity transition of new motherhood, sleep deprivation, and the gap between expectations and reality. It can begin within days of delivery or emerge gradually over weeks and months. At Bloom we specialize in postpartum depression and understand the nuances of treating it in a way that supports both you and your baby.
-
Burnout is typically tied to chronic stress and overextension — it often improves with rest, reduced demands, and better boundaries. Depression is more pervasive and doesn’t resolve simply by taking a break. The two can look similar on the surface — exhaustion, disconnection, difficulty functioning — but they have different root causes and respond to different treatments. If rest isn’t helping and you’re still struggling, it’s worth exploring whether depression may be part of what’s going on.
-
That experience is more common than you might think — and it doesn’t mean medication can’t help you. It often means the wrong medication, the wrong dose, or an underlying contributing factor that was never addressed. At Bloom we take a comprehensive, detective-work approach to understanding what’s driving your depression before making any recommendations. We look at your full health picture — including previous treatment history — to find an approach that’s actually right for you.
-
For many women, yes — and untreated depression during pregnancy or postpartum can carry its own significant risks for both mother and baby. At Bloom we stay current on the research so we can offer you informed, evidence-based options rather than defaulting to “stop everything just to be safe.” Every decision is made collaboratively with your individual health, your pregnancy, and your goals in mind.
-
Yes — for some women, depression responds well to therapy, nutritional support, lifestyle changes, movement, sleep strategies, and other integrative approaches without medication. For others, medication is an important and helpful part of the plan. At Bloom we never pressure anyone toward medication — we take time to understand your full picture and build a plan around your needs, preferences, and goals.
-
Depression during pregnancy — sometimes called prenatal or antenatal depression — is more common than most people realize, affecting roughly 1 in 5 pregnant women. Left untreated it can affect your ability to care for yourself, your bond with your baby, and your postpartum recovery. At Bloom we specialize in perinatal mental health and take depression during pregnancy seriously — offering evidence-based care that considers both your wellbeing and your baby’s.
-
Yes — deficiencies in vitamin D, B vitamins, magnesium, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids have all been linked to increased risk of depression. This is one reason we take a whole-body approach at Bloom and may recommend blood work to better understand how your physical health is contributing to how you feel. Addressing nutritional gaps can be a meaningful part of an integrative depression treatment plan.
