ADHD IN WOMEN

ADHD is often overlooked or misdiagnosed in women, but your struggles are real.

How Bloom Approaches ADHD

ADHD in women rarely looks like the textbook presentation — and at Bloom, we know that. For many women, ADHD shows up as chronic overwhelm, difficulty completing tasks, emotional dysregulation, and a persistent sense of being behind — rather than the hyperactivity that gets most of the attention.

When you come to us, we start by getting to know your full picture. We take a comprehensive look at your health history, your symptoms across different life stages, your sleep, your nutrition, and how ADHD is showing up in your daily life. We may recommend blood work to better understand whether nutritional deficiencies or other physical factors are contributing to your symptoms. From there we build a highly individualized plan designed specifically around you.

Your plan may include:

Integrative approaches

Nutritional support, sleep strategies, movement, and other evidence-based tools that support focus and regulation without medication alone.

Medication management

If indicated and something you’d like to explore, we’ll walk you through evidence-based options tailored to your individual needs, health history, and life stage — including options for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

COLLABORATIVE CARE

We believe mental health care works best as a team. We'll collaborate with your existing therapist or help connect you with one, ensuring your psychiatric care and therapeutic support work together seamlessly.

Ongoing follow-up

We check in regularly, track how your plan is working, and adjust as your life and needs evolve.

WHY BLOOM IS DIFFERENT

WHY BLOOM IS DIFFERENT *

ADHD in women is one of the most underdiagnosed and undertreated conditions in mental health — and at Bloom, we take it seriously in a way that many providers don’t.

Our entire team is certified in Perinatal Mental Health (PMH-C) — which means we understand how ADHD intersects with the hormonal shifts of the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, postpartum, and perimenopause in ways that significantly affect symptoms. We also specialize in ADHD medication management during pregnancy — an area where many providers default to stopping all stimulant medications without thoroughly reviewing the research. At Bloom we do that research. We advocate for evidence-based options and work collaboratively with your OB or midwife to make sure your care is coordinated and comprehensive.

We also understand that ADHD rarely exists in isolation. Many women with ADHD also experience anxiety, depression, or mood dysregulation — and we treat the full picture rather than addressing each condition separately.

WHAT IS ADHD IN WOMEN?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in women often looks different from the classic presentation — and this is one of the primary reasons it goes undiagnosed for so long. While hyperactivity is the hallmark symptom most people associate with ADHD, women are more likely to present with inattentive symptoms — difficulty focusing, chronic disorganization, forgetfulness, and emotional sensitivity — that are easier to dismiss or attribute to personality.

ADHD is not a lack of intelligence or effort. It is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects the brain’s ability to regulate attention, emotion, and executive function. And for many women it is only recognized in adulthood — often after a child is diagnosed, or after a major hormonal transition like pregnancy or perimenopause amplifies symptoms that were previously manageable.

You might have undiagnosed or undertreated ADHD if you:

  • Feel chronically overwhelmed, scattered, or behind no matter how hard you try

  • Struggle to start or finish tasks even when they matter to you

  • Have difficulty managing time, priorities, or organization

  • Experience intense emotional reactions that feel out of proportion

  • Feel like you have to work twice as hard as everyone else just to keep up

  • Have been told you’re smart but not reaching your potential

  • Notice your symptoms get significantly worse around your period, during pregnancy, or postpartum

  • Were never hyperactive as a child and were therefore never evaluated
